(Left column text) The daily ritual of brushing our teeth is as old as the Egyptians who used small branches where the ends were frayed into soft strands. Until the invention of Nylon® in the 1930s bristles were made from wild boar or horsehair. Cellulose Propionate is produced by only one company in the world, Eastman Chemicals. It is one of the very few plastics derived from a renewable source and has been used in production since 1928. Used in toothbrushes, it offers an alternative to its closest cousin, cellulose acetate which has a slightly sharp taste in the mouth. The Radius Toothbrush Company was started in 1982 by two architects who wanted to provide people with a comfortable and enjoyable toothbrush, soft Nylon bristles, large head area for low pressure, and a comfortable handle.

Below is a suggested recipe on how to make your own all natural toothpaste.

Mix three parts baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) with one part finely ground Himalayan rock salt.
Add three teaspoons of glycerine** (or melted coconut oil) for every 1/4 cup of dry mixture.
Add enough liquid to make a thick paste. If desired, a few drops of peppermint oil may be added to improve the taste.
Apply and use just as you would any other toothpaste. Store unused toothpaste at room temperature in a covered glass container.

Tips:

Don't like the flavor? You can use a different mint oil, oil of cinnamon, or oil of cloves (small quantity) instead of or in combination with peppermint oil. Use essentials that are Therapeutic grade and organic. Use EO very sparingly, just one to three drops should suffice.
Glycerine can be purchased at health food stores or from Amazon.com.

What You Need:

sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda)
finely ground Himalayan rock salt contains 84 trace minerals. (regular white table salt NOT recommended).
for moisture one of the following: water or green tea or Aloe vera juice.
vegetable glycerine
peppermint oil (optional)

**some believe that glycerine keeps the teeth from remineralization.

Telluride Film Festival & Radius Toothbrush

This year marked the 37th year for the Telluride Film Festival held in Telluride, Colorado. Back in 1974 Bill and Stella Pence along with Tom Luddy and Jim Card started the annual film festival in the city of Telluride. The festival is now operated by the National Film Preserve, LTD.

Each year the festival pays tribute to actors and directors who have fundamentally changed the film world. A different artist is picked each year to create the festival flag/poster. This years artist is Ralph Eggleston.

Dr Oz said that Gingivitis or Gum Disease is more common among people who are stressed out because 50% of people do not floss or brush regularly when they are stressed out, which causes your gums to recede and pull away from your teeth. You can chew on a Disclosing Tablet and swish water around in your mouth, which you then spit out. You can then see where you have plaque on your teeth because the stain dyes the plaque depositions on your teeth and gums. You should floss and brush your teeth every day, but Dr Oz also recommends drinking unsweetened cranberry juice to ward off plaque. Or Dr Oz said that you can even buy cranberry floss!

Did you know that Dr. Oz endorses the use of "cranberry floss". Today on his show Dr. Oz said that if you could only do one thing and that was either brushing your teeth or flossing you should floss, at the very least.

He then went on to mention that unsweetened cranberry juice was very healthful for your teeth, something about bacteria and the formation of plaque.

And right next to the glass of cranberry juice he had a generic box of cranberry floss! Well, we all know! He then stated that there is now even cranberry floss, although he did not mention a specific brand.

Recycling has been a common practice for most of human history, with recorded advocates as far back as Plato in 400 BC.

During periods when resources were scarce, archaeological studies of ancient waste dumps show less household waste (such as ash, broken tools and pottery)—implying more waste was being recycled in the absence of new material.

My thoughts: We all should live as if resources were scarce. Once an item has outlived it's original use for which it was purchased instead of tossing it in the trash take a moment to think about ways in which to renew it's life.

There are all sorts of grassroots (regular folks like me or you) who have gotten together in order to share resources.

Become a member of such groups as:

The Freecycle Network ™ is made up of 4,834 groups with 7,341,000 members across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them's good people). Membership is free.

Reuse it Network Find and join your local group to start reducing clutter in your space and helping someone else acquire what they are looking for! Simply list the item that you wish to give away and wait for someone to respond saying that he or she is interested in taking the item. Some people like to wait 24 hours before selecting the person to whom the item will be given. Others simply go with the first person who answers. How you choose is up to you.

Famous in Kutztown: Keith Haring

Kutztown is not only famous for Radius Toothbrush!

Did you know that world renowned and famous artist Keith Haring grew up in Kutztown?

He was born in Reading and was raised in Kutztown where he graduated from Kutztown Area High School in 1976. He then went on to attend The Ivy School of Professional Art, a commercial and fine art school in Pittsburgh where he studied graphic design.

When you stop by Kutztown you can see a few of Haring's art on display at several places in the borough including the High School, a lovely statue at the Kutztown Park and The New Arts Program (there is a large original that Keith painted on the floor).

Ok, Ok...I must admit, RADIUS is not the ONLY interesting happening in Kutztown.

Yes folks it is THAT time of year again....time to celebrate Pennsylvania Dutch (Deustch) Culture and life. And since my very own children are part Pennsylvania Dutch heritage I thought it a propo to give props to the 60th anniversary of this festival.

The Kutztown Folk Festival is loads of fun! It starts on July 3rd running clear through to July 11th.

I've lived in Kutztown for 15 years and its a pretty nice little town. And yes you can still enjoy the occasional horse and buggy plodding along the streets...especially busy on Sunday mornings!

The other day I decided to go to the local art store Dick Blick Art to purchase a small carry along sketch pad. Well after finding the perfect pocket sized pad to carry in my purse or handbag I figured I needed a carry case for my mechanical drawing pencil, ink pen and eraser. However, I just could not bring myself to pay $8 for a carrying case. The Libra in me kept way the pros and cons and I figured maybe I would but before you know it I was distracted and walked out of the store paying for the note pad and did not bother to pick up a carry case for the pencils.

Once at home I was ready to pack up my new art kit to go out with a friend it was only at that moment that I realized that I did not buy that case. It was for the best because $8 was way too much. What to do? As I was packing I noticed my Radius Original Toothbrush case. Everything I needed for my travel art kit fit right into that case.

This morning my son requested that I pack his school lunch with as little that needed to be thrown away as possible.

Today is Earth Day and his elementary school is running a contest to see which class has the least amount of trash to throw away.

I think the idea of encouraging the children to be mindful of the amount of trash they have to throw away at the end of the day is a wonderful concept however it is a concept that should be impressed upon the kids on more than just one day a year.

I told my son that he would win hands down but he said that the whole class has to do so. My fingers are crossed.

He told me that his teacher said they will go outside today and they must touch the Earth in order to feel connected to it. What a wonderful idea.

Earth day is a wonderful celebration and it is my hope that we can be mindful of the Earth every day not just one day a year.

People like our brushes for various reasons. Some like the cool innovative shape of the handle. Some people like the full brush heads even the large oval head of our ORIGINAL brush. And others enjoy the fact that we attempt to be eco-conscious with our product.

"It's nice to be out in the elements," said Knowles, 42, stirring dark, rich compost that will amend the soil at the small farm where he and fellow inmates of the Cedar Creek Corrections Center grew 8,000 pounds of organic vegetables this year.

I once watched a show where a woman spoke about trying to determine why her child was becoming progressively ill. The child would have a flare up which would then subside and each week it seemed the flare up would be worse than before.

The doctors could not figure out what was wrong either yet she knew that something major was happening and she was desperate to help her child. Thus she began to journal each day what she did, her child did and what she fed her child.

After a while she began to notice a pattern. She noticed that the child would have an ill flare up on Wednesdays like clockwork. After reading through her journal she realized that on Tuesdays she did her household cleaning.

Have you ever walked through the detergent/fabric softener/cleaning product isle of your local store? I have and I notice that my jaw muscles would ever so slightly clench up. Muscle clenching, headache...that is evidence of a negative reaction.

This is just to illustrate that we should be careful what we stash under our sinks, what we toss in the trash and what we use to clean our households.

In my home the cleaning products I use are: Baking Soda, Castile Soap (Dr.Bronners Peppermint), Hydrogen Peroxide, and white vinegar. However there is no need to be that radical if you rather purchase ready made.

I'm always excited to read what people have to say about RADIUS. At first I was completely sold on the ORIGINAL....then I switched off to the SOURCE.....now its the SCUBA. I can not make up my mind so basically I just rotate...whatever I am in the mood for that week or can find first!

Ok, the one that says the person borrowed from the girlfriends sink.... I'm wondering was it a new toothbrush or the girlfriend's personal toothbrush? Thinks that make you go.....hmmmm? Either way I am glad this person enjoys their new SCUBA!

Greatest toothbrush known to man
I borrowed this toothbrush from a girlfriend's sink once, and never looked back. These are great.
The Radius Toothbrush
I have been using Radius toothbrushes for several years now and find it impossible to go back to a "normal" sized brush. The radius bruash has a large, oval shaped head and the first time you use it you think it is way too big. But it takes very little time to get used to it and from then on it is very nice. The bigger head allows the brush to massage your gums as you brush, which is a good thing for your overall dental health.

Everything was as expected - great product, very high quality. I think this type of toothbrush is the best on the market, nothing comes even close.

This is the best toothbrush I know, other then the Phillips Sonicare. Great job cleaning teeth, feels funny at first but feels even funnier to go back to smaller conventional toothbrush design with small head. Brush Your Crystals

So, you know, I am always looking for creative RE-uses for RADIUS brushes. See here I have a whole post dedicated to RE-use before RE-cycle.

I looked over at my quartz crystal cluster that sits on my desk and I realized that it was in dire need of cleaning--more than a bit embarrassed.

As I turned the faucet on I noticed just how embedded the dust was in my lovely cluster that looks a little similar to the image above I had an AH-HA moment .

I reached for the RADIUS toothbrush that lay on the side of the sink and I thought to myself, "Another good RE-use of a toothbrush".

Sure I was a bit keenly happy with myself for having this profound break through! Just had to share it with you.

RE-use your old toothbrush to clean your crystals. All of those jagged points remind me of teeth...ok maybe if you are a shark, but you know what I mean!
